DPO-sponsored racer Chaz Mostert has charged into contention for this year’s V8 Supercars Championship after a stunning performance in round 8 at Sydney Motorsport Park.
Chaz won two races and placed third in the other to take overall honours for the round. He also set the pace in qualifying with two pole positions – bringing his season total to 10 – and a third.
Consequently the 23 year-old ace now sits second in the championship with 1741 points, only 174 behind his Prodrive Racing Australia team-mate Mark Winterbottom.
On current form the two PRA drivers are set to fight out the V8 Supercars title over the remaining six rounds, which include long-distance races at Sandown, Mt Panorama and Surfers Paradise.
And on current intra-team form Chaz is favourite to come out on top, having outscored Winterbottom in recent rounds.
DPO director Barry Morcom, a former racer himself, is thrilled about Chaz’s success, although it hasn’t been a huge surprise.
“Chaz showed that he was a future champion when he co-drove the DPO-Rondo BMW in long-distance production touring car racing in 2011 and 2012,” Barry said. “He had an outstanding rookie V8 Supercars season in 2013, and last year he took another step up by winning the Bathurst 1000.
“Now he’s a regular winner in the series, and at this rate he’ll overtake Mark and win the championship.
“On top of that he’s a terrific young guy – down to earth with no pretensions. He’s happy to chat with spectators at race meetings, which makes him one of the most popular drivers in the series.
”We’re proud to have Chaz as a DPO brand ambassador with our logo on his helmet.”
The next V8 Supercars round is on September 11-13 at Sandown International Motor Raceway in Melbourne.
